Zafos Xagoraris' The Performance
is implemented in the context of NEON's
exhibition programme for 2016

Re-creation of the large neon sign announcing the theater performance “Our Great Circus”, coupled with a sound installation inspired by the play, both installed as part of a mobile structure. The play was written by Iakovos Kambanellis (1921-2011) and performed at the Athinaion Theater in 1973, just before the Athens Polytechnic uprising in November of that year against the military junta. “Our Great Circus” has come to be seen as one of the foremost direct critiques on the dictatorship and as an act of artistic resistance.
