THE TOWN CRIER

12.09 – 31.10.2014

Gallery Francoise Heitsch presents a solo exhibition with Greek born, based in New York, artist Eleni Mylonas. Mylonas’s works were inspired by the improvisational protective headgear worn by the demonstrators in Kairo’s Tahir square during the Arab Spring. Fascinated by the quaint helmets she saw on the internet, Mylonas made a series of sketches later reworked as oil paintings. Eventually Mylonas started placing odd objects on to her own head, many of them detritus washed out in the Greek shores, creating a series of imposing large scale portraits of herself as Everyman expressing in this way her solidarity with the demonstrators and the universality of the human experience. The series culminates with The Town Crier video, in which the artist, wearing her grandfather’s military uniform and a self made head piece crowned by the statue of Liberty, sings the popular song that originated in the Greek shadow theatre Karagiozis which is a call to arms to all people against every sort of tyranny.
