in Erinnerung an Nikos Alexiou

r e v a l u e
in memoriam Nikos Alexiou

In the coming weeks, we will begin to exhibit artworks from our archive. The opening exhibition will be dedicated to Nikos Alexiou, who, at the age of 51 at the height of his career, passed away exactly ten years ago.
Nikos Alexiou has been known to German audiences since documenta 14. In the entrance area of the Fridericianum in Kassel, visitors encountered a floor projection that appealed to all senses. Immediately after entering the space, the entire floor area of the foyer was immersed by the digital animation “The End”; and not only the floor – the work also spread over to visitors, their clothes, and their inspecting stretched out hands and legs. Nikos Alexious’ ten-year-long engagement with the Byzantine mosaic of the Iviron monastery has finally reached its
destination. How happy the artist would have been, bearing witness to such an intensive exchange between the work and the audience. It would have been an extraordinary international debut… It might still be, because what is unique about artists is precisely this: their work will outlive them and so does their message and the aesthetic inherent to their work…
Alexiou spent countless hours with the Byzantine mosaic in the chapel of the monastery of Iviron. He attended several services and attempted, in as much as it was possible, to see things from a monk’s perspective in order to move beyond the work’s beauty and harmony and in doing so also explore the scope of its spiritual energy. He processed the internalised experiences of this intensive stay in his studio in Athens and transposed through his creative doing these spiritual experiences onto his work. The Byzantine floor mosaic became a matrix, which inspired a plethora of works. Nikos Alexiou elaborated upon and worked with this theme with every artistic means and media available to him until his death. He was tireless and full of devotion; like someone, who was aware of this treasure, which he nevertheless wanted to share with others.
What he discovered and of which he told us through artistic means, was an account of the significance of Byzantium; a Byzantine aesthetic, which in its heyday fascinated the world and which holds within the power to connect oriental elements with the Occident in a unique synthesis.
